community initiatives

Cicada’s community initiatives follow a two pronged approach - Social as well as Economic welfare - which help reduce human dependence on forest ecosystems.

A) Direct Influences:
Staffing: 95% of the staff at Cicada-Kabini have been recruited from the local village, giving due importance to local community development. This will be the staffing pattern at all Cicada resorts. Prerequisites are a willingness to learn and a hospitable attitude. The company has also tied up with Christ College to impart periodic training in hospitality and hotel management to the local village staff giving them skill sets that’ll help in a livelihood

‘One employee per family’ policy: Cicada has an employment policy which ensures only one person per village family is recruited by the company, such that more families are benefited. All employee salaries are approved by the Labor Department and comply by the government minimum wages act.

Employee Benefits: Local village employees enjoy city benefits such as bank accounts (many had never seen a bank before), retirement funds, cashless medical insurance cover for the whole family.
B) Indirect Influences:
Creating a marketplace: Produce such as vegetables, poultry, dairy and farm products are sourced from the local villages surrounding Kabini.
Community welfare programs:
We work closely with Kabini Foundation, a local welfare organization in the region which helps set up village dairies with high milk yielding hybrid cows, conducts health camps, and trains villagers in job oriented skill sets
Again through the foundation, contributions have been made towards better equipping the forest guards; scholarships were given to hundreds of children including contributions towards school fees, transport passes, books, carry bags etc.
Cicada has installed solar street lamps in the nearby villages, especially near watering pumps where women gather late at night to gather water. Children now gather under the lamp to study and play
Cicada also financially supports “Namma Sangha”, an organization that works towards providing LPG gas connections to villagers residing near protected areas thereby reducing firewood or bio-mass collection from Bandipur National Park
